The Space Nicks Came and Everyone enjoyed themselves

Many thanks to Lara Walden, Heidi Westerfield  and the Booth Hill PTA for setting up a successful sale of Saint Nick and the Space Nicks at the entranceway of the Booth Hill School in Trumbull on the last day before Christmas break on December 20th.
We did much better than I expected, especially after all the bad luck we had with the Craft Shows. We ended up selling 31 books and giving away over 21 free promo codes for the iPad storybook app version of Space Nicks HD! That’s 11 more books than my highest expectation. After the bad luck at the Craft Shows I became VERY gun shy and had lowered my estimate number to only 5 books so I was quite pleased.
I have to admit I was quite unprepared to have that many people standing in line waiting to have their book signed by me. Lol. But, it was all good and Stubborn Pixel will be able to give the Booth Hill PTA a nice donation of almost $235 for 1.5 hours work.

Holiday Carousel of Crafts Showcase – Epilogue

Winter Storm Part II

Having two Craft Shows spoiled by one Winter Storm was something I hadn’t anticipated, but…. The Holiday Carousel of Crafts Showcase on December 15th at the Trumbull Marriott suffered greatly from the ill effects of the previous days winter blast.
Once again, we had many no show vendors. Yes, the weather was a big factor, but mainly it was because they hadn’t paid the promoter in advance. The weather sucked, but was a million times better than the day before during the snowstorm. If they had deposits involved, they would have been there.
The upside was I finally made a profit, but not enough to break even for the money I lost at the Shelton Holiday Craft Festival the day before. Plus, as I told a vendor, I’m not here to ‘break even’.
It is truly a shame about the weather because, for what I sell, I need lots of foot traffic, so people can loiter by tables without feeling uncomfortable or pressured. I believe my books, original prints and original greeting cards are more ‘impulse buys’, you know… ‘Oh wait, this book would be great for ‘so and so’.
Even though it was better than the other shows by 3:30p most of the vendors were packed and gone. By 4p I was there by myself in a giant conference room. I was packed by 4:30p and gone. The show was supposed to be from 11a-5p.
Most of the vendors had had it with the promoter. Most were quietly saying amongst each other that they wouldn’t sell at his shows anymore, until a woman selling jewelry to my left totally lost her shit! “Get away from me or I’ll CHOKE YOU!!!! You’re TERRIBLE!!!! We should have WATER!!! Where’s the COFFEE??? Where are the SIGNS???? You have to promote the shows in the NEWSPAPER!!!!” She was screaming like a mad woman. Which sucked because even though there weren’t many customers at the time of her meltdown, there were a few. I felt bad for the promoter, he seems like a nice guy and the woman’s meltdown was incredibly unprofessional. Jeez, take it outside!
Take the weather out of the equation and I believe I easily double my sales, but what are you going to do? Like I said, never ever Double Dare the Craft Show gods. It’s just plain trouble, man.

Shelton Holiday Craft Festival – Epilogue

Let it snow. Let it snow. Let it SNOW!

Never. I mean never Double Dare the Craft Show gods. You’re just looking for trouble, man.

Snow. So much snow. The Shelton Holiday Craft Festivial on December 14th was a bust. If I wasn’t only 2 miles from the where the craft show was held, I probably wouldn’t have gone myself. As it was, only 3 other vendors showed up which made the space appear VERY empty. Customers were few and far between and after only 2 hours the other vendors wanted to split. Two vendors left by 1p but because I was staying, one other vendor decided to stay with me and she was promptly rewarded by a snow infused customer that came almost immediately after the others left and bought a bunch of her items (not mine, hers).
In the end we toughed it out until 2:30p and then packed it in. In 4 and a half hours I managed to sell one box of greeting cards. I told Heidi that even in that weather I expected to sell a minimum of 5 books and if I didn’t, I’d be depressed. Well, guess what…

Saint Nick and the Space Nicks HD – Christmas Interactive Storybook

iPad _iPhone1

Posted on December 5, 2013 – from

Saint Nick and The Space Nicks is an interactive storybook app that not only captures the whimsical fun of the original story, but also adds to the overall experience by adding in animations and hidden interactive elements. Expose your children to the universal appeal of Christmas while he learns a lesson or two about helping others with this very good storybook app.

I never would have thought that I would  look back on the Southbury Crafts Show and say, ‘Wow, I wish we had the same number of people from that show.’

Starting to get busy! Lol.

Starting to get busy! Lol.

Is there anybody out there?

Is there anybody out there?

Words can’t explain how empty it was. So that’s why I took photos! We did sell a touch better, being one week closer to Christmas did make a difference, but if there are no customers how can you expect to make money.

Southbury Autumn Craft Festival epilogue

November 12, 2013 / no comments

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. 2 steps forward. 1 step backward.

Well…. at least we sold a few items. Unfortunately, we didn’t sell enough to come out in the black. We didn’t even cover the $110 entrance fee.
At first I thought we’d have a little trouble when we got there. An exhibitor that was assigned to be next to us was squeezing into our space with her suitcase to ‘save’ room for a friend and fellow exhibitor. We were assigned a corner slot and because of the smaller table had no problem setting up.
When the organizer came by, this exhibitor began complaining that she had already requested to be next to her friend. Virgil (the organizer) then asked if we wouldn’t mind moving to the position you see in the photos. We didn’t mind at all as it was a much better slot. It was literally a 10 foot move. We had the wall at our back and a much nicer exhibitor next to us.

Funny enough, the exhibitor we made room for was the one who bought the only print that sold from us that day – a Kirk and Spock airbrush print. Even funnier, Heidi bought something from the ‘space invader’ exhibitor for Keira.
We ended up with a nice display, but we also discovered that a 4 ft table is just too small. We had no place to play the Space Nicks DVD or even the basket which held the extra watercolor prints. At least we had an extra chair that the basket sat on.
My helpers were great. They made it very easy to be there with us. I thought that at some point Heidi would have to take them because it would be too boring for them, but they hung tough and made me proud. It did help that they were able to play Minecraft on the iPad and laptop during a few of the long stretches of no customers. This is also where our move to a location with the wall at our back really paid off. The kids were able to play undisturbed without getting under any of the other exhibitors feet.

Aidan’s job was making rubber band wristbands. “If you buy something, you get one of my wristbands as a gift.”
Keira’s job was to come around the table to customers and show them the Space Nicks HD app on the iPad.
They both took their respective responsibilities very seriously and neither had to be asked twice to get out there with the rif-raf.
Heidi did a great job scouting the other exhibitors for advice about Craft Shows in general and where the best ones are. One of these exhibitors was a pretty girl and she came over with a list for us, Aidan gave her one of his wristbands. He was obviously smitten and when she left he said, ‘She’s beautiful.’ in a soft and dreamlike way. Heidi and I just laughed.
Because it was so dead, some of the exhibitors/vendors began  packing up an hour early. I held out hope for another 1/2 hour, but no dice, no sale. I thought briefly about trying to cancel out of the Danbury Show, but in the end I figured, wtf. One week closer to Christmas, might be all it takes for our sales to pick up.
So roll on Danbury Craft Show on November 17th. Well I guess the good news is that I won’t have to go crazy making new prints or greeting cards. We have plenty of stock left over from Southbury.
