Space Nicks Introduction Tips Promo

November 4, 2013 / no comments

I just completed our latest promo ad for our ‘Saint Nick and the Space Nicks’ Storybook app available for iPad, iPhone and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD.
For this ad we tried something and got two little guest stars to narrate. I may be a little bias, but I think they did a great job.
I have an ass-kicking Rode microphone, but I didn’t use it. Instead, I used the free app, Voice Record HD, on my iPhone and was able to record my narrators ‘on site’. After recording I was able to easily email the files to my computer and the upload them to Premier Pro into the project. Easy peasy.
With the Christmas season truly around the corner, it is time to get out there and get Space Nicks in front of as many people as possible!
iPad _iPhone4
  • Space Nicks has 32 pages of colorful and vibrant illustrations with buttons and hidden triggers that activate hundreds of animations.
  • For the iPad and Kindle Fire versions we have an additional section, ‘Paint Nicks’.
  • ‘Paint Nicks’ includes 5 space nicks drawings that kids can color with 16 different color pots and 5 different brush sizes. After they finish their artwork they can save it to their devices Photo Library or erase and start again.

Autographed copies of the children’s book, ‘Saint Nick and the Space Nicks’ by the illustrator will be available for $15

“Saint Nick and the Space Nicks is a light hearted, rhyming Christmas story with terrific color illustrations, appropriate for pre-schoolers. In Mears’ active imagination, Christmas is everywhere in space – and each planet has its own Space Nick. This is a goofy story that kids will certainly enjoy, but the illustrations are the best part of the book. The colors are bright and the wide variety of space creatures – versions of Santas and reindeer – are so clever.”

– The Berkshire Eagle

“St. Nick goes intergalactical… a hypothetical collaboration between Clement Clark Moore, who wrote ‘The Night Before Christmas’, and the incomparable Dr. Suess.”

– Berkshire Record

Boxed sets of our Handmade greeting cards will be available for $10 each.

Bi-plane SantaEach set includes 5 cards with original illustrations from Bill Westerfield and 5 envelopes. Each set of cards are packaged in Crystal Clear Boxes that hi-light the whimsical and colorful illustrations.

Archival Quality Prints will be available.

We successfully uploaded the new version to Amazon with the proper sizes for the screenshots. Now we wait for the final approval from the Developers Select Program. Presently we are PENDING.
With building complete, we are now gearing for promotion. Fingers crossed we make good headway. The 3rd promo animation is nearly complete. Music, CHECK. Sound Effects, CHECK. All we need is the voiceover. Too bad I kind of suck at this, but to my credit it is WAY harder than it seems. I’m still in awe at how effortlessly Robert Krulwich read the Space Nicks script cold when we were recording the narration. It truly is a gift. Still, I’ll give it a shot and maybe try a pass with the kids helping out. That could be interesting.
The downside of promotion is I had to ask Amazon Support another question….
Oh Amazon Support, are you paid by the quality of your vague answers?
What would William Shatner do?

What would William Shatner do?

With Apple’s Developers Program they give app developers 50 promo codes for each of their apps to distribute to reviewers, potential clients or friends. I emailed Amazon Support with my simple question. ‘Do you supply promo codes like Apple to give away to…etc, etc and if so where is the link?’
Their response: Thank you for writing in. Please go to the Amazon Gift Cards page at http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000619631 to purchase a gift card to send to your customers or reviewers.

Now this is an answer, but does it answer my question, ‘Do you supply promo codes like Apple?
How hard would it be for them to you say. ‘No, we do NOT supply our app developers with any free codes. All codes must be purchased.’
So do I write them AGAIN to ask them  to clarify their answer? I mean, I still really don’t know i they give us promo codes. They didn’t answer that.
Okay…… breathe.     Good.
Putting everything in perspective. We have a delightful storybook app that looks gorgeous and it is  now up on both the iTunes Store and Amazon’s Appstore. Google Play…. I’m looking at you next!

It’s a TRAP!!!!!!

Finally on Amazon, but… Oh Amazon Developers Support, why must you be so vague?

After failing to get our Kindle Fire HD version of Space Nicks to Amazon last year. It was our priority to release the new version for this year. At times it was tough going. My App Development skills are still in their infancy so I found building for Android on my Mac a bit trying at times. It didn’t help that Amazon’s Developers uploading directions seemed surprisingly vague at times.  With the ‘2 steps forward and 1 step backwards’ regime, Space Nicks was approved by Amazon and uploaded to their Appstore today.

Unfortunately I discovered that I was turned down for the Developers Select program because the Screenshots I provided for the app were not the required resolution size. They were proper sizes mind you, but if you chose to tick the ‘Developers Select’ checkbox, the Screenshots are REQUIRED to be at minimum, 1280×720.  You would think that if you tick the checkmark, you would get a warning about your images, but no. And since I had created the screenshots BEFORE the Developer Select program was available, I didn’t realize I was walking into a trap.

It's a TRAP!!!!

It’s a TRAP!!!!

Now to Amazon Support. Lol.

My question to them was ‘When I re-submit the app (update), do I have to submit a brand new binary file with the update being re-titled Version 1.1 (from Version1.0) OR can I just resubmit the ORIGINAL binary file, since the only problem were the screenshots that are delivered OUTSIDE of the binary anyway.

After waiting 24 hrs, they replied….. “yes, you can.”

WTF? Lol. Yes to which?

It took 2 more attempts. The latest contradicting their 2nd reply. Anyway, will have to wait until tomorrow to try. Stay tuned/

I will now have to re-submit the whole app as an update to be eligible for this program. I should stress that the size of the Screenshots I provided to Amazon was one suggested by Amazon during the upload process. Maybe Amazon should let you know on the upload page once you check the Developer’s Select box NO IMAGES UNDER XXXX size will be accepted. Just saying.
